JOHOR BAHRU, 9 June — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was awarded the opportunity to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) in developing our nation’s Climate Change Adaptation Framework for Water Sectors. 

UTM through its Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security (IPASA), would work closely with National Water Research Institute of Malaysia, KASA to develop a climate change adaptation framework on water sectors, based on collected information depicting the current scenario in Malaysia. 

This project is pertinent for society and policy makers in Malaysia in managing water resources under climate change scenarios. 

Not only that, researches often emphasized the significance of academic institutions in environmental discourses, particularly in conducting research and making tangible efforts to maintain and restore ecosystems. 

Therefore, this project acknowledged UTM experts and offered a great opportunity for the university to work together with the government in addressing and tackling climate change issues in Malaysia. 

Prior to that, the Minister of Environment and Water (KASA) Dato’ Sri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has launched this project during a virtual ceremony social media platform on June 5, in conjunction with World Environment Day. 

With the grace of the Minister of Environment and Water, IPASA looks forward to assisting the government in building up our nation’s resilience towards climate change effects, at the same time securing and protecting our valuable water resources for current and future generations.

Senior fellow of IPASA UTM, Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Yusop said it is undeniable that Malaysia has been identified as vulnerable to climate change. 

“Recognising the risks and adverse effects of climate change towards Malaysia, our government has invested concerted efforts in developing and implementing numerous strategies in addressing this issue. 

Within the climate change matrix, water resources are at the epicentre of projected climate change impacts. 

Our water resources will continue to be at risk, if there is no concrete actions taken on water resources management,” he said. 

Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Yusop would lead the project together with IPASA members namely Dr. Nor Eliza binti Alias, Dr. Nur Syamimi Binti Zaidi and Dr. Achmad Syafiuddin.
