UIRL Laboratories

The University Industry Research Laboratory (UIRL) functions as a centralised, shared research facility that supports collaboration across multiple disciplines within Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). It provides access to advanced analytical instruments and laboratory services for researchers from various faculties, including engineering, science, and technology. UIRL facilitates efficient resource sharing, optimises the utilisation of high-end equipment, and supports integrated research activities across diverse fields. By enabling collaboration across disciplines, UIRL contributes to a more connected and effective research ecosystem at UTM.

  • Chemical Analysis

Chemical analysis is a study of chemical composition and substances structure.

Chemical Analysis Laboratory is equipped with brand new and latest instruments and technologies for varies chemical analysis. We provide services and analysis on related area.

There are 3 laboratories for conducting the services:

  1. Analytical Chemistry Laboratory which provide services on the study of separation, identification, and quantification of the chemical components of natural and synthetic materials,
  2. Surface Science Laboratory which provide services on the study of physical structure properties of small particles and determination of elements of samples, and
  3. Liquid Chromatography Laboratory which provide services on the identification of component substances by using liquid chromatography.

Chemical Analysis Laboratory provides high quality analysis and tests for R&D in analytical and organic chemistry, biosciences and material sciences. We accept requests from students and researchers of government institutions as well as private sectors.

  • Mass Spectrometry & Molecular Spectroscopy

This laboratory covers two major field which are mass spectrometry & molecular spectroscopy.

What is Mass Spectrometry?

“Mass spectrometry is the art of measuring atoms and molecules to determine their molecular weight. Such mass or weight information is sometimes sufficient, frequently necessary, and always useful in determining the identity of a species. To practice this art one puts charge on the molecules of interest, i.e., the analyte, then measures how the trajectories of the resulting ions respond in vacuum to various combinations of electric and magnetic fields.” – John B. Fenn, the originator of electrospray ionization for biomolecules and the 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.

What is Molecular Spectroscopy?

Molecular spectroscopy is a method to study the molecular structure of gases, liquids and solids. It is based on the fact that vibration and rotation of the atoms inside a molecule has discreet energy levels.

Molecular spectroscopy (also called FTIR – Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy) is used in many fields today: Medicine – to detect Cancer, Pollution control and detection of poisons in real time, for the food industry research in many fields and for chemistry – process control and molecular analysis.

  • X-Ray & Thermal Analysis

Our laboratory have two major field :

1.X-ray Analysis

2.Thermal Analysis

    What are X-Ray Analysis ?

A technique that gives information on the crystalline forms and amorphous content of materials, which could be quite useful in failure analysis if the type of failure brings about morphological changes in the material under investigation. Other technique, x-ray beam to excite the molecules on the surface of a sample, leading to a release of photoelectrons. By analyzing the energy of these photoelectrons, we can learn crucial elemental and chemical binding information about a material’s surface.

    Service provided :

    1.X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)

    2.X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)

    3.Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS)

    4.Raman LabRAM R Evolution (Raman)

    5.Raman Xplora Plus (Raman-AFM)

    6.Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

    7.Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction (SC-XRD)

    Microscopy & Imaging

Microscopy is the technical field that uses microscope to view and magnify of sample that cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Each of view with microscope will be capture to produce an image.

The Microscopy and Imaging laboratory is equipped with various type of electron microscope and metallurgical microscope.

High Resolution – Transmission Electron Microscope
    TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE 120KV (HR-TEM 120 KV)
    TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE 200KV (HR-TEM 200 KV)
Field – Emission Scanning Electron Microscope
    Variable Pressure Electron Microscope
    Metallurgical Microscope

This laboratory also has equipment for the sample preparation of TEM and also SEM analysis.

    Focus Ion Beam
