TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON ANALYZER (TOC)

1 Location: Advanced Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (01-59-02)
2 Details of Instrument: The Total Organic Carbon Analyzer (TOC) instrument detect and measure the amount of Total Carbon (TC), Inorganic Carbon (IC) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC) in water (effluent water, surface water, drinking water and pure water). TOC can also determine the amount of carbon that include in organic substance directly. Have possibility to reduce salinity, acidity and alkalinity of samples. In addition to aqueous sample and solid sample, including soil, sludge, slurries and sediments can be measured.

Liquid Sample– (MODEL: TOC-L CPH E200/CPN)

    • TC measurement used the oxidation of carbonaceous materials to CO2 and H2O by high temperature (680oC) catalytic combustion (Platinum catalyst).

    • IC measurement, the sample is injected to a chamber filled with acid H3PO4 to form CO2 and H2O.For TC Standard Solution: Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate(KHP) or sucrose and IC Standard mixture Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate.

  • TOC is the non-specified quantitation of organic Carbon compounds. It is independent of the oxidation state of the organic compounds. For liquid, at least need from up to 100mL sample.

Calibration and Standard Solution: TC use Potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) and IC use Sodium hydrogen carbonate and sodium carbonate.

Solid Sample Module– (MODEL: SSM 5000A)

    • For TC determination, samples are placed in ceramic boats, which are then placed in a heated chamber.

    • For IC determination of solid samples: The sample is placed in ceramic boats and was injected phosphoric acid in 200oC heated chamber.

      The large sample size up to 1g and the separated TC and IC determination allows the exact determination of the TOC content. Measure range: TC= 0.1 – 30mg C, IC = 0.1 – 20mg C

    • For TC Calibration use Glucose and IC use Sodium Carbonate + Phosphoric Acid.

  • For TC Standard Solution: Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate (KHP) or sucrose and IC Standard mixture Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate.
